About the Phonak Lyric 3

Phonak describes the Lyric as the "world's only 100% invisible hearing aid that delivers clear, natural sound!" But, is it possible that the Lyric is completely invisible, and is the sound really clear and natural?

As it turns out, Lyric 3 is a very unique hearing aid, and the only other hearing aids that are directly comparable are the first two generations that preceded it. Lyric is inserted deeply into the ear by a specially-trained audiologist or otolaryngologist. The device stays in the ear for months at a time, is not taken out at bedtime, and is only removed when it is time to replace the disposable battery inside.

The small size of the device, and the deep insertion, mean that it is basically impossible to see the device when it is being worn. So, Phonak's promise of invisibility does ring true. But what about the clear and natural part? Well, that part will largely depend on your type and severity of hearing loss. As with any hearing aid, folks with milder hearing losses will experience a more clear and natural listening experience with Lyric. One huge difference though, is that Lyric's unique deep insertion means your voice will sound much more natural than it would with other in-the-ear style hearing aids. As it turns out, the smaller the cavity between a hearing aid and the eardrum, the less the occlusion effect (the effect that causing booming in your ear when you speak, etc).

Phonak Lyric 3 Reviews

Hearing aid reviews are fundamentally different from reviews for most other consumer electronic products. The reason is because individual factors, like degree of hearing loss, have a profound effect one's success and overall satisfaction with the product. When purchasing a hearing aid, you'll need to consider more than just your hearing outcome ... Continue reading

I have had the Phonak Lyric 3 for about 30 days. I have found the amplification very unnatural. The annoying noises (high frequency) have been amplified even when turned down to low levels to an unpleasant degree. Last week my right ear canal started convulsing and I had to remove the Lyric with the removal tool. I got it out but I scratched and bruised my canal. The audiologist said I need at least a week to heal before it can be put back in. Decided to leave the left one in to try to get used to it. I had a company retreat coming up and I figured I could get a wide range of hearing experiences to evaluate it and hopefully adapt to the sound and feel. While out of town the left side started whistling and feeling uncomfortable. Decided to remove it and discovered it would not come out and was creating pain when I tried to extract it. I contacted an audiologist who attempted to remove it but could not because it was firmly stuck in my ear canal. Every attempt to remove it felt like my ear drum was coming with it - excruciating pain! Was then recommended to a hearing Dr. who carried the Lyric and had a lot of experience with them. They noted that the removal strings were not intact and attempted removal with tweezers. The suction was too much as the lyric was too deep and the pain too great. After spending a day trying to get my hearing device removed I went back to the retreat wishing I never hear of Lyric. The audiologist told me I will need to visit my ENT to get the Lyric removed. I have an appointment scheduled tomorrow and I am praying that it can be removed without pain and damage to my eardrum. The only positive thing about Lyric is that they are provided on a trial basis. Having an invisible hearing aid is not worth the discomfort and unnatural sound. I am sure that it works for some but I guess that many, like me, find the Lyric intolerable.

I did like that no one can see them that was cool for someone who has always had big hearing ades. How ever I did find it unpleasant when they would whistle an you only have a few things you can do to fix it. Take it all the way out or turn them down. Which both ways defeat the  Purpose of having them to start with. Anything like sleeping could set them to whistle an that not fun to wake up too. The other part I dont like is no control of them so if you take them out you are on your own. You have to visit a doctor to put them back in. No thank ill stick to my normal hearing ades.

Need to replace them about every five weeks. They do not last months. They buzz and I need to dig in with my fingernail to stop the buzzing.

I have been wearing lyrics for 6 years after having worn traditional canal hearing aids for 17 years. I started wearing hearing early at the age of 29 due to inherited hearing loss. What a life changing experience. They are pricey ($3200/year) but they are worth it. I used to get lots of ear infections. I was told that lyrics were BAD for ear infections. Nothing could be further from the truth. Non a single infection is 6 years. I believe my ear infections with traditional aids were from putting them in and out and moving water and wax around in my ear. All the wax is now outside of the Lyrics...nothing between my lyric and ear drum. The sound quality is very good...and no one can see them. They are invisible. I can shower, swim (do not go under water), and sleep with them. They are also great at suppressing sound if my wife is snoring :) The first few fittings were tough. It took a while to get them not to whistle. Now, I just have the audi put them in and I move them around with my pinkie. Works like a charm. I was even able to take them out for an MRI and put them back in with pretty good results. My aids (batteries) last about 8-10 weeks before I have to change them I am torn, as my year subscription is up, as to whether I want to try a tradition cic aid with all the bells and whistles. Maybe I will hear better. Maybe I can go diving again as the aids will be easier to take out and put in.

I've been using the Lyric for 10 years now and looking to switch for more power and features like Bluetooth. The Lyrics have been really great for their intended purpose and I will miss some of the unique capabilities that only the Lyric can provide, mainly hearing 24x7 vs. taking the hearing aids out at night.
Member

Did you try a newer model with Bluetooth and bells and whistles?  I am currently near the end of my year subscription and may try newer aids to see if they are any better.  I'd love to know what you did and how it worked out.

Thanks

I enjoy my left side, but had lots of problems with right ear. My audiologists has worked with me but has not figured out the problem. Maybe we need an x-ray to check the ear canal.

Tried these for 2 weeks but last only 24 hours. Hated having occluded natural hearing and they felt like they chafed my ear canals. The hearing quality was excellent.

I have worn CIC and BTE aids in the past and nothing compares to the comfort and convenience of Lyric. Just put them in and forget them till the batteries wear out (about 5-6 weeks). No need to take them out at night or fiddle with batteries. They have been great--BUT they are very pricey and the price just went up from $1800 per year per ear to $2200. That's $4400 each year which is getting outrageous. I'm getting to the point where despite the comfort and convenience I'm thinking about going back to digital aids (probably Costco). I know the technology has improved over the last few years so I'm going to give them a try. If they're comparable to the Lyric sond quality, I'll switch--if not, I may bite the bullet and pull out my wallet to stick with Lyric.
Member
Are you saying that, with the Lyric, you would need to replace a $4400 set of hearing aids each year?! At that price, I would expect them to last at least 5 years, and then expect a very reasonable discount should they need to be replaced.
Member
Read the spec, its that much, per year.  Averages, on a three year contract, $180 per ear, per month, for 36 months. Rental. So you pay about $13k over three years. Its really expensive.

Can anyone justify the cost?

This is the third pair of aids I've tried, and the only ones I'll keep and live with. I especially like that I don't have to remove them every night. They are comfortable, and help with my tinnitus. Not inexpensive, but I've returned both less and more expensive competitive brands.

I like that I can wear my Lyrics 24/7. That helps me hear my children if they call for me at night and helps mask my tinnitus. The sound is very natural.

I tried these and within hours they were squeezing and had to go back for a different size. He has tried about 4 different sizes. Nothing has worked. they hurt my ear canal badly and I had to remove them after one night. Could not sleep on my side because laying my head and ear on the pillow was VERY painful. the one in my left ear was actually coming out of my ear. Horrible. Do not know what I am going to do. My ear canal is Highly sensitive and I cannot stand anything rubbing on it or inserted.
Member
I had exactly the same experience. Have tried different sizes and if they're too small, they leak and you get something like a wind whistling noise, but too big and you feel like your ears are blocked. I actually started to feel numbness around the area too. Sleeping is an issue and it can also dislodge them causing leaks. And then the sound quality was anything but natural. It sounded artificial and scratchy. Imagine an antique transistor radio compared to dolby atmos 5.1 and you have the difference in sound quality of the lyric to natural sound. I was really looking forward to the invisibility and short term permanence of them compared to others, which begs the question....if the battery in these small things can last months, why does the battery in bigger ones only last days? Glad I got them on a trial, but I'll even be cutting the trial short. Even wearing them on full volume, I still needed subtitles watching tv.

I am thinking that it had to do with the Lyrics are not digital??

I’ve been wearing them since 2014.  I like the convenience of leaving them in 24/7 but there are a few things that bother me.  When driving on interstate, I tend to hear road noise and usually end up turning the radio off because it’s too much.

I’m wondering if the Lyrics will ever offer a digital, IIC aid.

I just got these for the first time on Monday. I still feel like my ears are plugged. Is that something that goes away over time? I love the invisibility and the hearing quality!

I've been wearing the Lyrics for 1 month and these are my first hearing aids. Initially, the sound was quite harsh and tinny with no bass. I didn't like it, of course, but after a few days my brain started to adjust and the sound became slightly less harsh and tinny, but still no bass. After 2 weeks, the left one stopped working so I went in for a replacement. My audiologist also adjusted them to provide less high freq and more lows. The sound has continued to become more balanced in the last 2 weeks. The sound of a room full of people has always been loud and unpleasant, but that situation is almost tolerable now. I was told that my brain will slowly adjust, to a certain degree, over 2-3 months, and that has happened, fortunately, or I might have quit. I see now that one has to use the aids continuously for that to happen. One has to be patient. Hearing aids are not an instant fix and I will never hear like a normal person, but at least I can understand my friends now and don't ask them to repeat themselves as much. Yes, they are expensive and I will need to go in for replacements every 2-3 months, but at least I can hear people talking much, much better, I don't have to take them out to recharge, I'll get the latest models as they upgrade, I can easily put them in sleep mode when things get too loud, sleep mode is quiet but not silent so my car is much quieter and more pleasant and I just turn up my car audio, and no one knows I'm wearing them. For a while I didn't like that one of my ears sounded plugged up, but that seems to be decreasing just recently. Fortunately I have not had any irritation in my ears, which I understand some people do have. I think one has to wear/use a hearing aid continuously for ones brain to adjust to the sounds, or they will always sound unpleasant. Honestly, I'm not a Phonak employee. I just hope this helps someone as I've read a lot of rants about hearing aids and I think that people expect too much and don't understand about the adjustment that the brain makes over time.

The lyric has stretched out my son's canal and now the xxlarge don't fit. Did anyone else have this issue. My son has been wearing the lyric for 5 yrs. He is very disappointed. He liked the lyric now this.

I love the but lyric. The first year I wore them 2015-16 they worked great. Over the last year I have repeated problems with quality. The hearing aids stop working after one or two weeks and I have to have them replaced. This is a serious inconvenience. I have been told that the aids used to be manufactured in Switzerland but Lyric moved to another country to save $$. I have not renewed my contract because I do not want to spend $4,000 for hearing aids that do not work. Trish

If I did not use these Lyric aids then by the nature of my job I would not be able to perform the role at work I am required to do, my company pay the total cost of my Lyric hearing aids which is a massive plus as far as costs are concerned.£2800/ year

I have worn my Lyrics for three years. I have always had a problem with the buzzing noise. The left ear 👂 is no problem as far as fit is concerned, except when I sleep.

I have had a constant problem with the right ear. My audiologists has been a nice person and we have tried all sizes. Apparently my right ear is a problem. Cannot sleep on the right side because it hurts or buzzes rel loud. I turn it off to sleep. During the day I hear, but it feels like an ear ache, unless I pull the top of my ear all day.

It sad the the price continues to go up when we have problems with it. And no discounts for seniors. I’m sure something can be done to fix the problem in the right ear. Thanks for listening.

Hi All, I have been wearing the invisible hearing aids for about a year. I am in my 50's and have a genetic sensory neuro-bilateral hearing loss, and needs aids to fully function at work etc. I have an active life style, so loved the concept of inner canal hearing aids which you could wear for months, shower and sleep and run around. I tried them for a month and like them, although very expensive.  Yet, I am finding that they do not last as long as they should, or as stated, "wear lyric around the clock for months at a time without taking it out. through daily exercising or even showering....'  This just is not the case.  I have had to have mine replaced 4 additional times in the last 12 months and my audiologist thinks it is due to moisture from showering. Also, a few months ago I  scratched my inner ear taking one out and had to leave it out for about a month, but was still paying the subscription and could not get reimbursed.  I am now locked into a contract for 3 years paying while I am not using the product. Also I was always careful with not letting the hearing aids get wet when showering, using a shower cap and putty in my ears when washing my hair- but still the device is dying on me, and now my old hearing aids require repair and I have not got any back up to wear as my ear is healing again from taking a lyric out-Will I get compensated- probably not. If the anybody from Lyric bothers reading these reviews, I am curious if they will pay to have my other aids repaired.

I’m glad I did read this I was thinking about purchasing this for my daughter but certainly don’t want this type of inconvenience for her nor be trapped in a contract for something that’s of no use

I started wearing Lyric hearing aids about 2 years ago; (June 2017)  and they were life changing...just wonderful.  For whatever reason, the Lyrics gave me a calming sensation; they felt better in than out. They also eliminated the tinnitus in my right ear.

When I went for a new pair in June 2019;  something had changed; with the new pair, I was hearing ringing in my right ear and was no longer able to use the Lyrics as ear plugs, (turn them off completely).; which was one of the best features.  They would beep 4 times, then my head felt congested; I could not breathe and sounds were muted, as if the Lyrics were asleep, but I could still hear.

My Audiologist checked my hearing; no change; same as it was when I first started using Lyrics.  She put in a new pair; no improvement. She said the manufacturer suggested trying a larger size, so we tried a medium pair of Lyrics. Awful!!! Painful and constant congestion.  She put the small sized Lyrics back in; but I am not able to use them as ear plugs; they do not shut off completely.

I also noticed that the insert/removal tab that used to be made of metal is now 2 strips of blue plastic string, making it more difficult for proper placement and more difficult to remove.

Has anyone else experience quality/performance issues with their Lyrics?

Hello,

I just had the Lyric fitted 2 days ago and while the sound quality is amazing my ears feel quite tender and the feeling of them in my ear is annoying.

Did anyone else feel discomfort initially and will I eventually forget they are even in my ear or are you always quite aware of it?

Thank you

My initial adjustment period (about ten years ago) lasted about two weeks & included taking naproxen.

I have used lyric for the past year, I love the convenience of the product however they do not last the time frame they are supposed to. Max for me has been 5 weeks and then they begin to diminish in sound quality. My biggest complaint is way too much treble and in a noisy environment I can’t hear the person in front of me the background noise is overwhelming. I am considering another product that is not as invisible as the lyric but one that is fitted to the ear and has digital sound quality which I have been using the over ear to help with the decision on the sound quality before having custom mold done. I hate the idea of having to change batteries however for me the sound quality is most important. The high screeching noise of to high decibels drives me crazy.

I have been wearing a Lyric hearing aid in my left ear since 2011. My right ear is fine. I love it! If it 'whistles' I use my pinky to turn it and it's fine. I never think about it in my ear, except when I need to replace it, usually after two months or more. The sound quality, to me, is perfect. The only thing I can't do is swim underwater. Other than that I don't do anything different with the Lyric in my ear.

I usually take it out a day before I have it replaced to let my ear 'breathe.' It is very simple to take out.

I have now reached the largest size for my ear canal,  and am worried that I will have to get something other than a lyric. Anything on the horizon?
