Phonak Virto B Reviews

Hearing aid reviews are fundamentally different from reviews for most other consumer electronic products. The reason is because individual factors, like degree of hearing loss, have a profound effect one's success and overall satisfaction with the product. When purchasing a hearing aid, you'll need to consider more than just your hearing outcome ... Continue reading

Every six months since purchase in 2017 they have been sent back to Phonak for repair. My issue is similar to other wearers. The wax guard breaks a off part of the rubberized tube that it fits into.  For the $$$ spent this is not acceptable. Phonak customer service is useless. They simply tell me to go back to the audiologist so she can send them to Phonak for repair.   I will never purchase Phonak again and I do not recommend them.  I wish I could rerun them but am not getting support to do so.

I have been wearing the VirtoB70 for approx 6months and they have been returned for faults twice and now the filter holder is faulty and filter has fallen out in my ear twice so will be sending back again...pros are ..really comfortable so much so that I forget I am wearing them..feel normal again that they are invisible..like having control over volume..will persevere for awhile and see how they go..much preferable to over ear ids as my ears are tiny and kept getting blisters..so overall these are comfy as :)

I brought the Phonak B Virto titanium from Boots in Norwich in 2018. I had nothing but trouble with them, so much so after a year I had to be given a replacement pair - in August 2019. The new ones this week have virtually packed up, the left one keeps going quiet and stopping altogether. I am very fed up and angry with these hearing aids and will never ever buy another pair, which cost me nearly £3000. I am still having to have them adjusted to fit my hearing loss. I am so worried they will have to be sent away to be repaired as they take so long to be returned and as I am going on holiday in 2 weeks you can imagine how worried and frustrated. Total rip off. i have had exactly the same problems  and bought mine through Boot`s. I would never recommend them to anyone. The room in which I had the tests does not equate with the outside world, so the set up was inaccurate. I have had a brand new replacement which aren`t any better and I  didn`t receive the free filter pack as promised after waiting for nearly a month to get my hearing aids back.

I have had these for 2 years and they have been repaired 4 times. Twice becausethe washer type part that holds the wax guard in has fallen off with wax guard attached into my ear and have spent 2 lots of 6 hours in A&E whilst they routed it out. The fit of my left ear is poor, it keeps sliding out, its been back twice and is still not right. I find it difficult to hear the T V and all in all I am not happy with them and they cost me £2500!!!!
Member
How did you get on with Phonak when they replaced the washer holding the wax guard? Was it a quick/easy repair? This has just happened to my left hearing aid - I'm not sure if the guard/washer are still in my ear, so I will be visiting the walk in centre tonight! Second time it has been sent for repair in the last two years so not particularly happy with them.

I am a first time HA user. I have been diagnosed with mild to moderate hearing loss in my left ear only. I first tried the Widex brand of HA's but had terrible feedback and occlusion issues with them, I then tried the B90 IIC and what a difference, no feedback or occlusion. This is a very comfortable HA to wear, I sometimes forget I am wearing it which could be a problem if I am ready to shower. I have had it now for a month and never had a problem, the Widex brand, I returned after just a few days. The battery life is around 7-8 days. I use my HA from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm, everyday. I have heard people have had an issue with the auto-sense feature but it has not been a problem for me. It seems to adjust quite well in all surroundings. If there is one setback about the B90 IIC, I guess it would be about how small it is. You should have patience and good finger dexterity for changing the battery, but that is one of the reasons for getting this HA, for it being small and discrete.

These are the most expensive hearing aids I have ever bought in over 30 years. Bought in August 2017 and have been returned for repair a total of 6 times and my right one has packed in again. So it will now be 7. I would never recommend these hearing aids I am so fed up sending them back.

Great except for the trill I hear when I listen to music. That's the problem.

I have been wearing hearing aids for 7 years. My first pair were Starkey. A totally in ear set. I liked my Starkey aids, but managed to drop one on my hardwood floor and it cracked in half. I got them repaired, but down the road, the injury opened up again along the original fault lines. Rather than continue repairing, I decided to try these Phonak hearing aids. Mine are the Vitro B90. I loved the idea of Titanium. I haven't broken them yet! I have moderate hearing loss, and am still working in an office setting. I find my hearing aids definitely help with everyday speech settings like my job. Nothing seems to help in a crowded restaurant. In fact hearing aids always make that setting worse for me. I used to take my Starkeys out, and I take these Phonak out in that situation too. I never get an type of feedback, unless you like press something right up against your ear. So, I don't do that. :) These hearing aids struck me as very expensive ($6k overall, so $3k per ear). That being said my hearing is important, especially since I am fairly young and still working. I am curious if there are equally good products for less money though?

Best fitting hearing aids i have had to date, previous HAs had issues with retention during function. Speech listening is good and have opened a world of new sounds i did not previously used to hear ie birds tweeting and paper rustling. Only downside is you cant fine tune these yourself.

The AutoSense is terrible. It will try to change the program based on the listening environment but it does a terrible job of it. Does not seem loud enough. Static/tin sounds occur frequently

For my level of hearing loss these new aids have been great! They are not huge, but they pack enough equipment in them to improve the hearing capability in my left ear. I was at the top range in my old aids and it was becoming a problem. I really like the Phonak product line!!!

I was just fitted with virto titanium after using Starkey sound lens for years. The virtos wouldn't stop feeding back in the audiologists office, they had to plug the vent tube to make them stop. This makes my ears completely occluded. I find myself just taking the hearing aids out to be able to understand people and not walk around feeling like I have a plug in my ear. The sound lens is a much smaller and discreet aid, deeper fit. The audio signal processing on the starkey seems light years better than the phonak even though its 7 year old technology. Im hoping return visits to my audiologist will improve these problems but as it stands I feel I will be returning them and going with starkeys again.

What was your final decision?

I went back to Starkey.  The phonaks were an absolute waste of time and money.  I spent a year trying to get them to work sending them back and trying again and again.

Phonak as a company provided ZERO support as well.

I am very happy with the B90s. The fit is perfect, the handling easy. For me it was important that the aids are not visible. I tested the phonak Lyrics, which are pushed in all the way. Perfect for non-visibility, but I did not like the fact that I cannot remove them and have to careful while taking showers. With the B-90s The drawback is that I have to change the batteries every 2-3 days. But overall I am super happy and think that I should have done this a while ago

Fit is exceptional. The amplified sound is hot. Having a real problem with entrainment. Like a reverb making quite difficult to distinguish speech. Phonak has not been helpful in resolving. I am waiting Starkey soundlens IIC test drive as possible replacement.

I have used hearing aids for approximately 10 years. Initially, I used a Siemens BTE which I wound up using more and more sporadically. Approximately 5 years ago, I started to use Lyrics, which really solved many problems. I did not really have to think about the hearing aids, as they were always in and working. Unfortunately, I have had increasing problems with the Lyrics. Initially, they were good for 6 to 8 weeks before needing to be changed. for the past year they have only lasted a week or two. I have decided to try something else, and the Virto B90 titanium was suggested. I have only had them for a short time, but so far so good. Sound quality has been excellent, and there is no abnormal wind noise, rustling or whistling. I believe I hear better than with the Lyrics and when they are inserted, they virtually disappear, both visually, and feeling, that is I do not notice that there is anything foreign in my ears. There is no occlusion and only whistling is if I try and stick my finger in my ear. I am becoming more and more adept at installing and removing. Battery life has averaged a week so far. And now, I am free to jump in the pool with my grandchildren! Any changes, I will repost.

I am ordering 2 tomorrow and have been fitted for them. I work on the phone a great deal and am anxious to know if you have any issues using a regular phone or a headset? Many thanks and are you still as happy with them as you were 3 months ago?
Phillip B
Evan, how so are you able to be free to jump in the pool with your hearing aids? Have they told you they are water tight? I am currently wearing Q 90's BTE phonaxs and cannot wear them throughout the day to to heavy perspiration, they shut down on me constantly I and have to pull them out. So I only get to wear them in the evening watching television.
Jessica R
I, like Phillip, am also wondering about the pool. Were you told you could do that? I am relatively young and researching my first pair. Thanks!
Evan F
I am sorry if I misled anyone. The lyrics were inserted by the audiologist and were intended to stay in for at least a month straight, so no jumping in the pool. These Virto B90s are easy to take out and reinsert so only issue with jumping in pool is remembering to take them out. Same with shower. Now about 6months and still happy with them. Battery life is consistent 6 days using from 7:30am to 10:30pm.

How much did your set of Phonak Virto B Titanium IIC B90 hearing aids cost? Where did you purchase them from? It's been 16 days, do you have any complaints about choosing Phonak Virto B Titanium IIC B90 hearing aids? Thanks!
Member
I assume he means he is able to take out his hearing aids on demand. With his older set the lyric that was not an option.
Member
Hi Evan, I read your post on your new hearing aids. Are you still happy with them? I have damaged hairs in both ears, so my problem is more with "garbled sounds" than volumn. Does the brand you purchased help with the clarity or mostly volumn? Love to hear from you Best regards Paul V

Only had for a short time, but so far I'm really impressed with the size, comfort, and sound quality from these. My previous pair of in the ears were more noticeable and didn't handle my hearing loss as well. I have severe hearing loss in the higher tones, and my doctor was able to bring down some of the higher tones using the phonak sound recoverer. Sometimes on a cold morning my aids are cold going in. Otherwise, I haven't noticed any downside to the titanium.

24hours in and so far very happy. Best fit i have ever had and the speech clarity is miles apart from anything i have ever tried or had before

Can you enlarge on why they are not too good. I was quoted £2700 for same two hearing aids that I need. can you help with any advice? Fiona

I have just had these hearing aids fitted about two weeks ago. They are worse than my NHS hearing aids which are behind ear. I cannot hear nearly as well. this is being blamed on my Ear Canal getting bigger? In only a week. seems strange think I will be going back to NHS ones. Fiona McDonald

I have had this hearing aid since March and have had some issues with craftsmanship. The wax grommet has come out of the aid twice, and I am not just talking about the guard, but both the guard and the piece it goes into. The last time this happened I had to have the audiologist remove the grommet from my ear with a tool. I also had a previous issue where the inner separated from the shell and had to be replaced. This will make the 3rd time I have been without the aid for a week. My previous V90 didn't seem to have this amount of issues.
Member
Apart from all this how does this hearing aid compare with the V90?
Member
I’ve had the same problems. I might get one to two weeks use before it happens again. It’s hard to justify the expense with these reoccurring problems.
Member
I am terribly disappointed the number of times I have had to send the hearing aids for repair. The receiving tube has to be re-glued so that the wax guard will fit. The tube falls in making the hearing aid useless. I’ve had the hearing aids for 6 months and have to send them back for repair 5 times!!! The repair shop scratched the titanium shell!

I have had the Phonak Virto B Titanium IIC B90 hearing aids for a few months. They work differently that the Virto Q70-10 units I have had for nearly 5 years but the sound is generally good. My one problem is very serious- the right unit starts slipping out after a few hours when moisture starts to build. Have had a new mold made but get same result with replacement. Very unhappy with this. No problem with the other side.
Member
I have had the Phonak Virto B Titanium IIC B90 hearing aids for a few months. They generally work well but the right one starts slipping out after a few hours as they seem very sensitive to moisture. It has been replaced after using a new mold but the result is the same. Very frustrated. No problem with the left side which is shaped differently.

has anyone had trouble wearing them with headphones? They seem to turn off! and the minute you take the headphones off , they turn back on... not sure if it is the Autosense?
Member
I just received the phonak B990 and I must admit, I do not like them at all. There is a constant hiss coming from them and it feels like my ears are clogged up all the time. I find them a little uncomfortable. I wear them while working and by the end of the day I can't wait to take them out. If I didn't have all that hissing, I imagine they would be all right. I am on the phone a lot and use my left ear mostly. When I hang up the phone, I always hear three beeps. Does anyone else have them problem? I have a two week checkup coming up and I'm not really sure I am going to keep them. I don't want to spend over $5K for something that is frustrating me.
Member

I have had my B90's for a week having had Phonacs for the last five years. They seem a little 'thin' on most programs (which may be a tuning issue) and the auto sense has a habit of wandering around using different settings that were not really appropriate. It is difficult to hear when the aids decide to focus on a different or distant  conversation siting in a cafe, in car hearing is not great, I think being close to the window does muck up the processingun with reflections from the glass and occassionally I get a feedback whistle just in one ear for no reason I can understand. Regarding the headphone issue the phone can be set for the duo phone feature, this is actioned by putting a magnet (which they supply in the travel case to glue to the phone  handset or the magnetic speaker in a desk phone handset or a set of headphones) near the hearing aid, the beep tells you it is going into the Duo Tone setting and then sounds again when you are returning back to the normal program (when the magnet is removed from being close to the aid). The feature does give some benefit when using a desk phone but trying to listen to music is nearly impossible. Far better to get the blue tooth connection to your mobile via the pilot.

Feature Explanation: DuoPhone: Improves understanding on the phone by automatically streaming the caller's voice to the other ear, so that the voice is heard in both ears simultaneously.

I am wondering, these aids are  quite expensive, if these came out in 2017 is there a newer later model phonac hearing aid available ?
