Hearing aid reviews are fundamentally different from reviews for most other consumer electronic products. The reason is because individual factors, like degree of hearing loss, have a profound effect one's success and overall satisfaction with the product. The snap connector on my Baha 5 broke late last year. The processor now is not secure to use, and keeps falling off. It has been sent to Cochlear for repair.

Today I received the quote for repair - $384 !! That includes service and labour. I rang to enquire about the quote and was told I would be sent a re-furbished  Baha 5.

So not the one that I sent back, but someone else’s that has been sent back. I’m a bit astounded really.

So, no repair actually gets done. I will have no idea what was wrong with the re-furbished one, if I proceed, that I get sent back.

All sounds like a big Rort to me.

How do you guys sleep with the little "screw" anchored to your skull? I having hard time sleeping on it. There has to be something that goes around it to make sleeping better?

The surgeon told me I would have no pain after two weeks but still have pain a year later. None of the functions work properly. I keep mine on #2 setting for mine which is for wind but it doesn't work. Can't drive with them in unless Windows are up. Can't wear hats with them in. They fall off head so easily. Had both sides done and my left side feels like running your fingers over small speed bumps, hurts like hell and doctor won't listen to anything I say but doctors really don't listen anyway. Gonna have mine removed.

15+ years and 2nd BAHA later you can still buy a used car cheaper than a Ba!Ha! (Manufacture laughing at customers)  Noise cancelation does not work, wind noise drives me crazy, sound is hollow like a wind tunnel.  If you want noise this is your processor!  If you want to know what others are saying not so much.

The baha 5 is fine, and it does improve my hearing, but it costs over 100 times it's weight in gold, (for reasons I cannot imagine are necessary) and fell apart in one year. At this rate I will need to set aside a large portion of my savings to ensure I can afford it when it breaks again next year.

De Baha5 Power is niet echt fijn. Er zit een galm in mijn beide toestellen. Er is geen specifieke uitvoering voor het Linker of Rechter oor waardoor het aanzicht en bediening niet fijn zijn.

I can hear very little, Before I got my Baha 4 I had 2 operations on each ear to rebuild the inner ear it worked at first the back where I was and more loss, I am almost deaf in one ear and can here a little in the other. The 4 then the Baha 5 work for me but it sucks that they do not connect with an Android phone, I looked forward so to getting the new 5 for just that reason. If you are in a large room or an unamplified hall it does not work. I am stuck because I can not use a regular hearing aid so its better than nothing. to damn bad that they cant do apple or android so your phone will work without that damn clip. Guess they did some deal with Apple, shame on both of you if that is what happened.

I have zero complaints about my Baha 5. It is really easy to wear and use. The implant surgery was a breeze and I finally can hear conversations in the car, home and enjoy movies again.

Because of my inner demise, a traditional hearing aid is of no use to me; enter the BAHA 5. I absolutely would recommend this. Early on, I was inclined to think I made a mistake. Give it time and go back and get tweeks - I had feedback, certain noises overwhelming, etc. I was fortunate; it only took me 2 trips after the initial set up to get things configured properly. You also have to give your skull time to get used to something stuck on it, AND adjust the magnet strength if necessary. I started with a 4 and got horrible headaches. Went down to a 3 where I am today (surgery end of May, started using BAHA in June). Cochlear has been extraordinarily helpful when I have called in as well. I am very happy to finally have a solution for my one sided hearing loss. It is kind of strange to feel your skull and feel the implant, but the result is worth it. Because of the shape of my skull, the surgeon had to place the implant fairly close to my ear so my sunglasses don't work. I need the cable temple sunglasses that wrap around your ear now. If you wear glasses daily, this may be something to consider. I wear the device 5-8 hours a day, depending on what is going on. I have worn it longer on occasion as well. I answered the question above regarding telephone use, but it for me is a non issue. I use my good ear on the phone, wish N/A had been an option.

Do not waste your money. No manual buttons to control power, programs and volume. Must have IPhone to use that application. Cheap battery door/compartment. Poor sound quality.
Member
Exactly the way I felt about the loss of volume control. For the sake of a smaller aid, now one can't control it anymore. I did that all the time with my old BAHA.

I hated this device. After having it for almost 2 years, I was fortunate to get an infection at the site and found out at that appointment that the annoying screw could be removed within minutes. Imagine having a screw installed into your head. And not being able to get it out. I was reminded of it day in and day out. It was very uncomfortable when laying down. At the end of each day there was this disgusting crusty thing that would either fall off or end up getting twisted in my hair. The unit that you plug on to the screw was very noticeable - even with my long, wavy hair. People always asked me what it was. Then, it would somehow find a way to communicate with things that made noises - like elevators and copy machines. I'd be sitting at my desk listening to my hearing aid communicate with the copier. Then, if you hug someone, the things starts ringing really loud. Like I want to hug someone and announce to everyone that that noise was my hearing aid, and yes, I am partially deaf. Then, at the bakery, someone walks up to me and hands it to me. I said, "how did you get my hearing aid??" and was told, "I saw something fall out of your hair when you walked in". Please don't waste your time with this device.

Well stated. My experience is very similar to yours with the BAHA. Constantly infected, have to sleep on one side my whole life, does not work well in a noisy room. Mine is coming out. So they removed your entire BAHA in minutes?

The Baha system, using bone conduction, bypassed the conduction loss produced by congenital middle ear problems which limited clarity for conventional hearing aids. Sound through the Baha is clearer and far more natural than with my experience with conventional hearing aids. The absence of a mold or tip in the ear has reduced the propensity for middle ear infections produced by the "hot box" effect in the middle ear produced by hearing aid molds and even tips. A surgical implant is initially more complicated than a simple hearing aid, but when all is said and done, the Baha is more comfortable than a conventional hearing aid. Downsides: the device is extremely moisture sensitive--a single drop of light rain generates a screaming crisis calling for transfer to the drying jar; the battery door is easily accidentally separated from the device; and the device itself is easily subject to dislodging and dropping with a hug or an accidental brush with another object. The safety loop provided is so long that it creates yet another hazard so I do not use it. Cochlear is sending a shorter one that clips onto your hair. The benefits of clear and comfortable hearing more than outweigh the downsides...but they do make the device a bit finicky. I didn't realize how much I was missing, even with two conventional hearing aids, until I started using the Baha in conjunction with a hearing aid on the less damaged ear.

I have the BAHA 5. I've had good hearing my whole life until now (I'm deaf on my left side), so my opinion may be biased, as not everyone who has a hearing aid knows what natural sound is supposed to sound like. So, that said, I don't have too many good things to say about that BAHA 5 in the 2 months I've had it so far. Very first: this device is not built for the elements. It is water resistant, but not water proof. As in a little sweat will get into the battery hatch and your device will stop working. You'll have to take the battery out and wait for your device to dry out before it works again. Cochlear needs to understand that a hearing aid is literally someone's ear in place of their actual ear, so it has to be built for the elements. All this money put into technology and it can be stopped by a little sweat? Who let you release this? Another fault: this device will pair with everything. If your phone rings, it routes to your device. If you play audio/video, it will route to your device. Sounds awesome. It WOULD be, if the sound quality was actually anything to brag about. It's by far the most disappointing quality I've ever heard. There's no point to ever pair these settings to your device. I either have to quickly take off my device to answer my phone or struggle with my settings every time. I understand technology has come a long way, Cochlear, but if you put an incredibly important device on the market, work out your kinks. Because now i'm stuck with this device literally forever. For those of you thinking about which device, PONTO vs BAHA 5, keep in mind that you are going to be married to one or the other, because of the abundment will only fit one device or the other. I don't know what the PONTO is like, but I know what the BAHA is like, and I'm not really happy about it.

Lack of compatibility with android is a real draw back. Weak battery door. Sometime a sound occur even in a quiet area. Baha web site for Cochlear needs work. Need to have more control over settings with my iPad. Seems reliable so far. It does improve hearing.

I've had unilateral deafness as long as I can remember. It wasn't until a year ago I was fitted for any hearing aid at all and I'm 55 years old. The first was the Baha 5 which wasn't really giving me enough Gain to my good ear. So after a few months I was fitted for a Baha 4 Power and used it for a year about 7 months, it worked well but I missed the Bluetooth a lot. I recently upgraded to a Baha 5 power. I thought the Bluetooth was the best part of getting the new Processor, I was totally wrong! I have to say this, the Baha 5 Power represents an immeasurable increase in sound clarity and Gain over the Baha 4 power. The Baha 5 I had first probably gave the same quality but didn't have the energy to get all it was sending to my good ear. I seriously feel like I'm hearing so much more it's a godsend for me.

Quickly adopting and adjusting to various sounds that were non existent before due to wearing under powered spectacles bone conduction hearing aids. Clarity of sound particularly speech has markedly improved. From past experience it will take approximately a month to completely adjust to sounds and be comfortable with it.

Hearing aid has been helping me to hear better at work. As I have good hearing on my right ear, I never needed to use my hearing aid for my phone. I found it annoying that whenever my phone is close to me it automatically sync with my phone when I do not want to (example: when my husband need to use my phone but it kept syncing to my hearing aid).

I have a baha 5. And I am not happy at all with it. This is my number 2 baha 5 and it's not much better at all. I have had problems from the first day it was turn on. Plus if you get there abutment you can't switch over now to other device like you could they stoped that to. Please dont get one until you are sure about it. Now I fill stuck with nothing to use. Bad sound bad feedback. Buzzing. A sizzling sound at times and now so muffled it's hard to hear out of it. Good luck if you decide to go this way.

I want my BP100 back! The Baha 5 has been a very big disappointment. The BP100 was more durable, and actually came with controls on it for turning it on/off, changing programs and volume. Who makes something that doesn't have an manual power button? The only way to turn it off is remove it, and open the fragile battery compartment. and take out the battery. It was much easier when I could turn it on/off, or adjust it while it was still on my head. Nothing like being in a work conference, and having to remove your ear in front of everyone. The app to control it doesn't work with an android phone! I heard better with the BP100. The sound quality with the Baha 5 is very weak. And because there are no manual adjustments, I am stuck at the volume the audiologist set at installation, unless I want to continue to pay $250 to go back and have it adjusted, and re-adjusted. For the money they charge, you would Cochlear would have actually offered something that was better than the model before it. The technology abilities are nice, but do you know good until you spend a whole lot more money to utilize. There should be manual power, program and volume buttons on every model.

I have two Baha 5 and so far am finding the quality of sound much improved over my previous Bahas. The outdoor programme on the app works very well and I no longer hear the wind whistling through my aids. As these aids are some of the latest technology I am dissappointed there is no loop facility for when visiting theatre, church etc. Has anyone found a solution for listening to the movies when travelling by plane. With the previous aids I had an attachment for the aid which plugged into the sound source. Does anyone have a soluton how to overcome this. apart from wearing the old aids.

hi, you mention the outdoor programme, how did you get that on your baha, is it done though a app or the hospital

I am so excited to finally have United Healthcare approve my appeal for the BAHA5 implant. I have surgery June 19th next month. Can’t wait to hear better. I’m a hairstylist so loosing hearing in my right ear has made my job a lot more difficult. I will let you know in September how much I like my BAHA. THANKS!!

Hello, I read your review and was interested in how you are doing since you had gotten the Baha5.  I am very interested in your input . I was a stylist for many years and  I am seriously considering having this procedure.
Member
I had a BP100 for many years. I gave it a score of 2 out of 10, it was more annoying than useful, it had poor functionality, sound quality, etc. It was a $6-7K device, that alone was unbelievable to me. In any case, now I am approved for a BAHA 5 upgrade through my insurance, but out-of-pocket cost is $4250. Yikes. My concern is it will not really be any better, and there are enough negative posts in this forum to give me second thoughts. Why can't they put in some cool noise cancellation technology, that would be a no brainer. Take the noise picked up from the processor and pump it to your good ear at 180 phase difference, where it will then cancel out the noise and then you'll hear your friends talk in a noisy room. Cochlear apparently has no imagination, ingenuity, or innovation. I bet I could engineer an off-the-shelf bone conduction system that actually had benefit. Noise cancellation, controls, durable, water-resistant, wind-resistant. Think I'm going be happy without one until they do it right. a
Member
Hi I have one of these and I don’t like it, what are the other options out there right now? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Member
I've had the baha 5 for over a year. I still am not even 60 % satisfied. I cannot hear in a party surround. The noise is picked up more than words. I have a difficult time hearing the person facing me. I'm very frustrated. At home or grocery store ok. But in malls and parties it is completely useless. Very upset. The doctor said she programmed it to eliminate background noise...but found out it was not helpful at all. I'm ready to give it up. I even tried adjusting from mobile phone, no matter which way I programmed it, it was complete disaster. I ended up leaving earlier due to frustration.

I'm thinking about getting Cochlear's new Osia implanted hearing aid. I'm new to BAHA style aids. I'm  a musician and concerned about quality of sound. i tried out a few different brands' external 'test' models in the audiologist's office. They made a difference for sure--the volume went way up in my bad ear. But the sound quality for my guitar seemed poor. It may have been several things. but many have complained about the sound quality of the Baha 5.

I want to get this right or pass if possible. i wear traditional aids with decent success. Word recognition is excellent. But theoretically a BAHA would bypass my bad middle ear and connect to my perfectly fine auditory nerve.

what to do?
