Hearing aid reviews are fundamentally different from reviews for most other consumer electronic products. The reason is because individual factors, like degree of hearing loss, have a profound effect one's success and overall satisfaction with the product. When purchasing a hearing aid, you'll need to consider more than just your hearing outcome ... Continue reading

My Kanso 2 was only recently activated, so I can't say much about the processor itself. However, the clip that connects to clothing in case the processor falls off is next to worthless. The clips are poorly designed and made of cheap plastic. Although I have tried to be extremely careful, I have broken both of the ones I was provided. I am currently on vacation in a location where I can not currently get a new clip. I am afraied to wear my Kanso 2 without the clip as it does sometimes fall off or get knocked off. I will try to "jury rig" a temporary fix, but if it doesn't work, I am stuck without being able to use my implant. I'm very frustrasted with Cochlear America for making such a highly engineered device and then usung such a chintzy device to secure it

First my background…. I suffered complete sudden single sided hearing loss in my left ear over night  4 years ago this week. Initially went with CROS hearing aides as CI was not approved by insurance yet because with 100% hearing in other ear, “I wasn’t deaf enough”. They were okay, definitely better than nothing but not great.  Now I am 12 weeks post-op and about 8 weeks since getting my Kanso2 activated. I couldn’t be more happy.  4 days after activation I was able to comprehend my first word. I was using an app called Word Hunt as my Cochlear Copilot access wasn’t working yet. I stayed up for hours on that ap and kept getting more and more words that night.  I watched YouTube with the captions turned on over and over. You have to put it the hearing rehab work.  I am still not 100% and there are sounds and music that still doesn’t sound right (like between radio stations) but I believe it will keep getting better. Now I use the copilot for word practice, especially choosing which word is correct vs two similar words. I love that ap.

As far as processor staying on my head. Initially it was an huge issue but my AuD told me to wear the headband as much as possible for 3 weeks so my skin flap could flatten. I did just that. I even got an extra headband which Cochlear delivered in 2 days so I could hand wash one and wear the other.  I wore it from the time I woke up to the time I went to sleep (except for time to let my hair dry after shower). After 3 weeks I started trying to wear just with safety hair clip. It was good but still would fall off with quick movements, however that has continued to get better. Now I can wear it for an 11 hour work day as a Physical Therapist and it never falls off unless I forget and scratch my head and knock it off. I can even lean to my left with processor toward the ground and it stays on.  It does take some time first thing in the morning when I put it on to get a good seal. I It will fall off 3 or 4 times in the first 20-30 minutes, but after that it stays well.  I will say I have always had very short hair and I have continued to buzz the area of my CI to level 1 clipper, but I feel that is a small sacrifice for the ability to hear.

I was worried reading some of the reviews that I would not be happy but I couldn’t be more satisfied.  I encourage all of you to do your best to put in the hearing rehab work and make sure you wear the processor as much as possible. Listen to a word over and over and over until you can understand it.   Listen to familiar sounds over and over. I would stand under my kitchen clock with no other sounds going on and just listen to the tick, tick, tick. I flipped a light switch over and over.

I also got a ear plug for my good ear to decrease reliance on that ear and force my CI ear to do the listening (in the safety of my home of course).

Use tools like YouTube, Spotify, hearing hint & cochlear copilot frequently.

I know I was lucky as my hearing loss was only 4 years vs others with a longer hearing loss time but I am definitely an advocate of the Kanso2.

I hope this helps anyone having trouble or considering a Kanso2.

how great to hear that you are doing so well. I too lost my hearing in right ear overnight 7yrs ago. I tried Cross but no benefit. 2 yrs go I went to see the surgeon. I wanted something to equalize sound since I could not tell where it was coming from. He convinced me that a CI would be a great benefit so I tried it. The difference is I was not told about auditory rehab. I thought all I had to do was wear it and I did 12hrs/dayx7days a week. The surgeon is world renowned in NYC for CI implants Unfortunately after the surgery the audiologist on Staten Island has little experience. His audi in NYC has alot of experience with rehab. Nothing was ever offered to me. I felt I was on my own to figure it out. It wasn't until 8months after activation that I found out about audtory rehab while on a cochlear website for CI. It has been 2yrs since activation. My word recognition is only about 17%. never got much higher. You are so right that auditory rehab plays a vital role. I still feel I was never given the aftercare I should have been. While I still try to make it work I have lost my energy for it. The surgeon never seemed to care about my results over the last 2 yrs after my hearing test. I was reminded not to expect too much from day 1.I am 73 yrs old not tech savy but very active and energetic. Keep up the good work! So happy to hear your amazing progress.

My Kanso 2 was activated on 02/18/2022. I had terrible problems with/echo-feedback and radio-in-between-stations phenomena. It was unusable. Technical issues resulted in replacement of processor on 03/18/2022. This resulted in better, but still unacceptable performance. I Consulted with Dr. Steven Zupancic, Dept. of Otolaryngology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center on 04/04/2022. His software adjustments resulted in substantial improvement, but still not good communication. After some more fine-tuning, he instructed me to use it for two weeks and then return to consult with him. He anticipates that some more neurological improvement is possible. But he also allows for additional adjustment because the adjustments he made were “so large”. I have since spent a day in therapy and my understanding already seems to be improved. So I am hopeful that Dr. Zupancic will eventually be able to achieve an acceptable level of understanding.

Hi there, we are sorry to hear that you are struggling with your Kanso 2 Sound Processor. Cochlear offers some additional hearing therapy resources that may be able to compliment the adjustments and work you are doing with Dr. Zupancic. If you are interested in our therapy resources, you can go here.

I have suffered with the radio in between stations sound for 1 1/2 yrs. still have little to no word recognition. Have had numerous mappings with no great result. My problem is I was not informed how vital it was to do auditory rehab and utilize all the streaming devices i was given to get the max benefit. I am not tech savvy. Had I known I would have not done this for single sided deafness. When you read success stories they have all spent alot of hours to train the brain to hear and understand. All I can say is keep up with any exercises that are available. Some from Cochlear are free and there are sites on line that offer this training. You did not say if you have single sided deafness.Don't give up trying. I don't know your age group. I hope you have success.

The Kanso 2 works great for listening to conversations. The microphone works great using the controller in noisier rooms as well.

The one word if caution I offer is that the streaming feature is not working for me. I had two different Cochlear-trained technicians as well as a hearing aid specialist try to set it up so I could listen to music. Each is them went so far, then told me to go online.

The online help was too complicated for me, so many steps to go through in specific order and finally after months trying off and on, I did get it to stream music last night and it was so nice. But I turned off my devices and plugged them in for recharging overnight.

When I got up this morning, the device would not stream. I spent an hour or more trying to get it to function again and gave up. Music is important to me, but not worth the frustration of trying to get all the equipment to work properly.

For the basic function of listening to conversation, I find Kanso 2 to be great, a life saver, which is why I gave it four stars. For streaming to both ears, one a Cochkear and the other a Resound hearing aid, not so good. Too many different devices involved, each with step by step instructions that I found hard to follow.

I can only hope, should I live so long, that Cochlear would figure out how to simplify the streaming to both ears, because when the streaming works, it is very nice... If only I could get it to work without spending hours trying to set it up each time I wanted to listen.

Love that it is off the ear. Sound is good. Refuses to stay on my head! Any slight movement and it falls off. When I walk it feels like it bounces. I have the strongest battery available. Wearing the headband works but gives me headaches. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have Kanso 2 and Nucleus 7. Both have weak magnets and Kanso is too heavy for given magnet.  I have +5 magnet which is the strongest and still can't keep it on my head.  I have very short hair and slight movement just takes Kanso 2 right off.

Sound quality is mediocre for both.  It's been 8 montb and still sounds like chip Munk and very weak over the air sounds.

I stream from my phone and I can understand but sound qualitybis subpar.  Luckily I have other ear somewhat working naturally so with over the ears headphone, I can hear things stereo but not my Kanso 2 itself.

I'm glad the insurance paid for these. I would've been very angry if I had to paid 10s of thousands of dollars.

have been using CI for 17 months for single sided deafness. I agree with you. I have seen no benefit. Every thing sounds like a radio in between stations. No word recognition.(been tested numerous times)I believe my problem is that I was never informed how important technology is to get the most benefit. You need to use apps, live streaming devices and alot of auditory rehab. I thought all I had to do is wear it! Was I mistaken. All the devices they gave me when I was activated gave me so much anxiety, not tech savy, don't even use a cell phone or a tablet.I think Drs and audiologists should include this in their evaluation and not just assume that everyone embraces technology. I am also glad that I did not pay for this. Now I am stuck with this implant that gives me no benefit because ins. probably won't pay to have it removed. I have the Kanso 2

Have had numerous mappings including 3 from a Cochlear audiologist. The results are always the same. little to no word recognition. I guess I am just 1 of those people who does not benefit from CI'. While wearing it I cannot have a 1-1conversation and understand what is being said. I still can't tell where sound is coming from. My original issues. This falls under the Regret catagory!

I had my implant (Kanso 2)  4 months ago and still it won't stay on my head. My Nucleus 7 is the same way. I have to wear a headband to keep it on my head. The new MRI compatible magnet is not as powerful as it should be. WHY is the company still selling these I have no idea. This has been a constant problem for many consumers also. Just saying, Customer

Cochlear Americas

Hi there, we are sorry to hear that you are struggling with magnet retention. We would recommend that you reach out to your Audiologist to determine if there is a stronger magnet that could assist in better retention. We also have retention devices that could help you. You can find those options here.

I have the original Kanso battery operated .   I now have the new Kanso 2. Only issue Im having is that it has fallen off frequently . This happens while I am trying to attach the hair clip. I use to put it high up and now it is at the bottom. Also I have found that the processor  it sticks out of my hair when it is on my head which I never had a problem with the older one. Nice to be able to camouflage it. The nice option is that it works from the phone instead of a remote .

Been using it 3 months now. See no improvement.Has made hearing worse in crowds,Can't watch TV or tell where sound is coming from.(MY original issues) There is 2 different types of sound competing.Sound is like a radio in-between stations.I wish I could have heard this prior to getting CI. I never would have gone through all this.It is physically and mentally draining. I wear it 12hrs a day 7 days a week in hopes of seeing some improvement. This is not for SSD

I love my Kanso2!  I find it extremely comfortable and have no problems keeping it on my head even while exercises.  In fact, I never really think about it at all, it's so unobtrusive.

I have two. Works seamlessly with my cell phone. No on the ear hardware. No batteries to replace. Easy to use, dry, and charge. No hard to find button. Headband works great but slightly reduces hearing level. All in all, a really great hearing system.

I don’t like the way the hair clip safety line attaches at the bottom of the Kanso2. I previously had the Kanso and it attached on the sides.  I would much rather be able to have the hair clip high on my head allowing the Kanso 2 to hang down over my internal magnet. Gravity works in favor for us who are at the highest strength magnet to have it hang in place.

I absolutely love the off the ear. I found myself giving up the Bluetooth of my N7 for my Kanso originally. Now that I have the Kanso2, with the off the ear and the Bluetooth it is amazing. The dry box/charger is also an amazing invention, so easy to use.

Thanks so much for all you do.

I've only had the Kanso 2 for about 2 weeks, but so far it is great.  I've had cochlear implants now for about 12 years.  The feature that I like best for the 2 is the phone streaming, that seems to work pretty good.  I have had phone problems in the past, so the streaming feature is working well for me.  I am still getting used to it for now.  Also like the Nucleus App on the phone for regulating volume, that is also new to me.  Overall I am a huge Cochlear fan, it has been a life changing experience for me.

I am fully enjoying the Kanso 2's for two main reasons: (1) the Kanso 2 is off the ear, and (2) I do not have to worry about inserting a rechargeable battery, as the Kanso 2 is a one-piece processor.  Besides that, everything else is extra, but those extra features are all important, including the lasting charging-power of the rechargeable within the Kanso 2, which is more than enough and makes me feel that I can certainly rely on my processors.

I love the off the ear option, no problems with glasses or mask. The direct streaming is a game changer and enables me communicate easily over the phone. I enjoy music as well, and the sound quality is excellent! But best of all I don’t have to worry about the weather-IP68 means I don’t have to go deaf in the rain-which is a new sound I enjoy!

I am bi-lateral with Kanso 2's. I wasn't yet eligible for insurance upgrade on the 2nd one but I liked the first one so much I paid for the 2nd one.

Best part:  No processors hanging on my ears that interfered with my glasses; no batteries to take off and charge; very easy to monitor and adjust from my phone with the Nucleus smart app; excellent battery life- would probably last two days but i charge both every night.

Nothing to dislike so far. have had them for about 6 weeks.

Hi….so sorry to hear of your frustrations! Has anything improved since your April post? Something that helped me….and still does….is asking what’s that? Early on it helped my brain recognize sounds. I guess it still does because I still do it!

I wore hearing aids for about 15 years and went to bilateral CIs in December 2015. It was really weird at first…..but constant “training” made better hearing happen for me. I initially tried the online training programs, but then just did my own thing….constantly challenging my brain and CIs to connect sound for me. God bless my husband who is constantly answering my “what’s that?”

Thanks for comment, Nothing has changed. It is 1 yr since activation. Still very little word recognition. Have had multiple mappings.Still can't understand anyone in crowds or tell where sound is coming from. Still have a hard time when talking 1-1 while wearing it.This is not for single sided deafness. I am giving up!My plan is to have it removed. This is physically and mentally draining. Sorry I ever did this. All I wanted was something to equalize sound(BAHA)  but the Dr thought CI would be better.I never had high expectations (as I was told not to) but I had hoped for something, anything to make things better. All it did was make this worse.

Member

I would like to hear from others who had no success with CI. It seems that all I read is how great it is. Its over 1yr. still have seen no benefit. Still can't hear clear sounds. Last exam I was at 44%. No word recognition. Have had numerous mappings,& integrity test.Everything is working OK but no word recognition. An audiologist from Cochlear came to assist with my mappings. Ringing just keeps getting worse.I wear the implant 14hrs/day. I have now started to wear it 24hrs to drown out the ringing. The Dr says it will improve! Really!. No one wants to admit that this is one of those failures.I guess it doesn't look good for the company or the Dr. to admit this.I appreciate their efforts but when is it enough? The stress is getting a bit much.

is it possible to put by software that the processor emits a sound to find it easier when it is lost???

Member

I DEFINITELY would love this feature !

Ive had to search high and low with my family a few times to find my Kanso processor.Getting ready to upgrade to Kanso 2 and I’m happy that it does have the find your processor feature so at least you know approximately where it is if you’ve lost it !

Member

the current search function is not enough.

It is necessary that it emits sound, since sometimes you can lose it in a dark place

Member

I definitely agree!

once it ended up in a drawer , another in a jacket pocket after knocking it off my head both times and it took me a very long time to find as well as much anxiety!:)
