Dr. Christine Pickup is an ASHA certified Doctor of Audiology.  She was educated at BYU (undergraduate and masters degree) and received her doctorate from A.T. Still University.  She has worked in the field of audiology since 2000, in both private practice and in an educational setting.  She opened her own private practice in Rupert, ID in April 2014.   She is the only pediatric audiologist in the Mini-Cassia area, and takes care of the hearing health of all ages.  She is a wife and mother to four children.  When she's not running her clinic, she is usually in the kitchen cooking up something yummy, catching up on a book, or playing with fabric.  She and her husband Westy built their home in 2012, and spend any free time working to put in the yard or finish another room in the basement.

I have been practicing audiology for 28 years. I have watched audiology and hearing aid technology evolve over the years. It is truly remarkable how amplification has become smaller and more technologically advanced over the years. The latest advances with NeuroTechnologyTM allow a person to truly hear better in background noise, focus on what you want to hear, and help your brain get the information it needs. On top of that, hearing technology can help patients access their mobile phones and personal communication devices through their hearing devices.

I became interested in the field of audiology after visiting my grandfather when I was 12 years old. He was sitting at the kitchen table completing a crossword puzzle and I was rummaging through his junk drawer. I came upon a dish of hearing aids. I had never seen him wear hearing aids before. I asked him why he never wore his hearing aids? He stated, “The last guy that came through town said his hearing aids were better than the previous gentleman’s that he had purchased! None of them work worth a hoot!”

I always wanted him to hear better and enjoy our family gathering more!

I went on to study at the University of Wyoming receiving my Bachelors of Speech and Hearing, and Masters of Audiology. I then received my Doctor of Audiology from Salus University. I have practiced all areas of audiology including adults, pediatrics, vestibular assessment, auditory evoked potentials, intraoperative monitoring, and amplification of adults and children.

I am married and the proud father of two sons, three daughters, and two grandchildren.

When asked how I chose Audiology as a profession it is difficult to sum up briefly. I grew up performing manual labor and operating heavy equipment and semi-trucks for my father’s construction company – and loved every minute! Ideally, I wanted to continue a profession allowing me to be outdoors all day every day. I considered pursuing a landscaping degree; however, science and the human body has always amazed me and was something I wanted to study.

I stumbled into the field of audiology not even knowing what an audiologist was. I was pursuing a degree in speech pathology when I was required to take a few courses in audiology. I was fascinated by the complexities of our sense of hearing as I took the various courses on hearing/communication.

My interest in audiology peaked as I learned that audiologists diagnose newborn babies hearing loss and provide the means to hear their parents’ voices for the first time; I learned that identification of a hearing loss in a toddler or child struggling to develop language or succeed academically can ameliorate the situation with proper audiologic diagnosis and treatment; I learned that audiologists could help teenagers and adults of all ages avoid depression, social embarrassment, anxiety, limited employment in the workforce and even avoid early onset dementia. I am happiest when helping others and becoming an audiologist was a perfect fit for me.

Being an audiologist has been greatly rewarding. I recognize that we are all unique individuals with very unique needs and have enjoyed the challenge of personalizing each of my patient’s diagnostic/treatment plans. I feel fortunate to be a part of this time in history when technologic advancements have allowed audiologists to do this better than ever imagined.

When not working at our main professions, my husband and I are busy raising our 4 young children in addition to raising alfalfa hay and a small herd of cattle and horses. A few of my obsessions are my husband, my children, my horses, landscaping our homestead, jogging, skiing, basketball, playing the piano, and anything and everything to do with outdoors and adventure. I grew up in Teton Valley, Idaho, directly under the beauty of the Grand Tetons. I am a mountain girl at heart. My husband couldn’t move his potato company to the mountains so I am happily here at the base of Mt. Harrison and in the reflection of the Snake River living all my dreams!

Review of Christine Pickup, AuD

When we first went to Dr. Pickup, my husband was extremely resistant to getting hearing aids. His past experience was watching his father and friends struggle constantly to use their instruments and my husband did not want to have to go through the same hassles, thinking that hearing loss and tinnitus was just something he had to deal with. What a pleasant surprise to enter a professional relationship with Dr. Pickup. Upon first entering her office we were instantly put at ease by her friendly and professional manner. She explained the hearing tests she was about to perform and then explained the results. She did more testing than we had expected and was able to diagnose problems from more than one test. The Dr. was able to pinpoint problems in my husbands hearing that confirmed what he had been experiencing. Dr. Pickup then explained the options for the various styles of hearing instruments and we were able to pick out a style that met my husbands needs. The initial fitting and explanation of how to use the instruments was helpful and put my husband at ease with how to adjust and deal with the intricacies of his new hearing instruments. Within one month his hearing aids were adjusted to his hearing needs and equipped with a therapeutic program that has helped his tinnitus immensely. Overall we would highly recommend Dr. Pickup to anyone who has a hearing loss and especially to anyone who has struggled to get adequate use of their current hearing aids.

If you are having hearing problems, I highly recommend Dr. Christine Pickup. She has worked with me for several months to fine tune and recommend the hearing aides that are best for me. Thanks Christine, Louise Parker I never thought that I would be able to get my mother to try hearing aids again after a bad experience with trying them the first time. Dr. Pickup was just the person that could work with and encourage her. My mother's life will be enriched by being able to hear again. Thanks Dr. Pickup you made my mother's life easier and mine too. Review of Christine Pickup, AuD

I would just like to share my experience here. I have had hearing loss for many years and about 8 years ago had hearing aids for the first time. My first experience was almost my last. The Dr. was a great guy but the followup was not very good and I grew to hate my hearing devices. Time goes by and my hearing gets to the point that even I can not ignore it any longer. Between my wife getting increasingly irritated, not being able to hear conversation, not being able to hear wild game in the field (I am an avid hunter) and not being able to hear noises coming from machinery I work on I decided to try again. Back in October I tried a different Audiologist and, because of insurance issues at the time, had to put the hearing on hold until after January not to mention I felt like I went to a place where they were more worried about selling a product than the customer. The time came to schedule. I saw a billboard on the highway to Rupert for Mt. Harrison Audiology and didn't think much about it. A couple weeks went by and I could not remember the name so I googled hearing aids and got the number. I had a great feeling about this so looked up the web site and was impressed by the level of education Christine had achieved and the apparent commitment to her trade. I called and made an appointment and Christine was very pleasant. I went to my appointment and was blown away. Christine's attention to detail, concern for her patients, and approach were outstanding. One thing that struck me right off is that she isn't just a button and knob turner just trying to market a product, she is very skilled in her trade. Christine performed test's I had not had before and also looked at the medical side of hearing loss besides what a piece of paper with some lines on it showed. She did not try and throw me into the top of the line product rather she examined what I expected and my life style then made recommendations. It didn't take long for me to decide the model and features I wanted. We ordered the devices and in a week I got a thank you card in the mail. I was amazed. In this day and age where you are luck to get a verbal thank you Christine took the time to write and send me a thank you card. This is what customer service used to be! After a follow up and adjustment I am very happy with my choice to come to Mt. Harrison Audiology and Hearing Aids, LLC and see Christine. From my experience to date I am a life long customer!!!!!! I do not think anyone can go wrong if they need an Audiologist to see Christine.

I am extremely pleased with my experience with Christine Pickup and Mt. Harrison Audiology. Her exam was more thorough than any I had previously. She did not start out showing me the most expensive hearing aide first, but showed what she felt was the best for me. Christine answered all of my questions in detail. I would highly recommend her to evaluate your hearing needs. Anne Kimmett
