About the Widex EVOKE

The Widex EVOKE™ Fusion 2 is a Made-for-iPhone, receiver-in-the-canal (RIC) hearing aid that comes in four performance levels. Widex has received positive reviews for its use of machine learning in the hearing aid, with a “SoundSense Learn” feature that personalizes and optimizes sound settings in any listening environment, in real time.

Constant improvement through machine learning

SoundSense Learn lets you make on-the-fly choices that serve to constantly improve the performance of the EVOKE Fusion 2 hearing aids. First, you listen and compare two A/B sound profiles, then choose one you like best using the Widex smartphone app. Based on your choices, the hearing aid learns what settings you like and deploys them when you experience similar listening environments in the future.

Hearing Tracker recognized Widex’s machine learning breakthrough when we named the EVOKE Fusion 2 one of the “Best Hearing Aids in 2019”:

By giving the user a very straightforward task (choose A or B) that adjusts multiple hearing aid settings in a meaningful way (to provide sound optimization), Widex has hit a home run for users who wish to have more control over their individualized sound settings. And it gets better. Over time, EVOKE gets to know your listening preferences, and through machine-learning, can predict the right sound settings without you needing to do anything at all.

- Hearing Tracker, “Best Hearing Aids in 2019”

By recording all your choices, SoundSense Learn also gives the hearing care professional insights into your sound preferences, making it easier to provide programming updates when needed.

EVOKE smartphone app

In addition to SoundSense Learn, the Widex EVOKE smartphone app offers a variety of control options, including advanced control for streaming, volume and programs, directional focus, and more. With it, you can create and name your own personalized programs and save the settings.

It also lets you make individual volume adjustments on each hearing aid, adjust the directionality of microphones, and set location-based programs to switch on automatically. The app also downloads automatic updates from Widex with new features and product enhancements.

DEX wireless audio streaming accessories

In addition to Made-for-iPhone capability, the EVOKE Fusion 2 offers additional 2.4 GHz Bluetooth connectivity, utilizing an accessory streamer for non-iPhone Bluetooth devices. It is compatible with Widex DEX assistive listening devices, including the COM-DEX Remote Mic and the and the TV Play audio transmitter.

Rechargeable battery option

EVOKE Fusion 2 hearing aids use size 312 disposable batteries and also have a rechargeable option. You can ask your audiologist to retrofit them with a new battery door to accommodate the ZPower rechargeable batteries.

Tinnitus relief

Widex was a pioneer in developing tinnitus relief solutions for people with hearing loss. The EVOKE Fusion 2 hearing aids include Widex’s Zen Fractal Technology for tinnitus relief. The technology generates soothing sounds that mask the often-distracting buzzing, humming, hissing and other noises created by tinnitus.

Widex EVOKE Reviews

Hearing aid reviews are fundamentally different from reviews for most other consumer electronic products. The reason is because individual factors, like degree of hearing loss, have a profound effect one's success and overall satisfaction with the product. When purchasing a hearing aid, you'll need to consider more than just your hearing outcome ... Continue reading

Widex EVOKE 220

I have a Widex Evoke E2-rk-312D for my left ear, as my right ear is deaf. I use the Widex only for TV and in a group. The battery only last 2 days with use of 6 hours/day. If it say battery low the batteries voltage is still 1.35v. Why is the low limit set so high? Most other applications can operate with lower voltages down to 1.1v. Is the setting set by the factory or are we able to set it.

Other wise the aid is working well.

Inconsistent and very expensive

Have had mine for 3 years and they have never been right

Sent in twice to be reworked and they last about 3 weeks and then they are back to normal

Frustrating that I spent 5000 for something that is just not any good

First, it a huge investment to get these hearing aids$$$ I like the programmability in the app! I got the rechargeable batteries and they have been nothing but trouble. At first the batteries would last all day then after a week they would not. I wear them about 17 hours a day and need to use regular batteries to finish the day. I’ve only had these 16 months.

I was given multiple sets of rechargeable batteries and all have failed!!

I now was told Widex would do nothing about this except offer an upgrade for $500, thanks a lot Widex!! These will have lithium ion batteries, I hope they are a vast improvement, it’s their last chance with me!!

Unfortunately, they seem to spend more time at Widex than in my ears. Not really, but they have been back and forth several times.

When they work, they are excellent, best hearing aids I've ever had.

But I have run into a series of unusual problems. My audiologists say they have never seen a run of problems like mine.

My biggest disappointment is that they cannot do Bluetooth direct to an Android, and it requires a $250ish ComDex accessory to do so.

The sound - the most natural to me, the least artifacts and compression weirdness. Love the app and the amount of control you're given as a user. The Music program is great, and being able to create your own "programs" on the app is really helpful. Took a while to get it dialed in, but have been using for about 1.5 years now and happy!

I wear the Widex Evoke 220. I really liked the Widex Evokes from the day I started wearing them. I love the clarity, no distortion at all. Also like having the ability to control them with the buttons on the aids or by using the app on my phone. I will say that the app needs some improvements. I do still have problems with Tinnitus, but the aids help somewhat with that. I might need to try Tinnitus masker that Widex has. Overall very happy with my aids. I have had no problems with them. Also, these are not top of the line as I have mild/moderate hearing loss.

Since acquiring these aids in late 2018 my husbands ears have developed severe and chronic Inner ear pain in first six months.  The audiologist requested assistance from a Widex representative. She laughed and insisted it was preposterous to blame the hearing aids. Insisted he continue to wear and get used to aids. A further three months of me ( wife) insisting. He kept trying and I could not continue the cruelty. He cried with pain. Audiologist had been gradually reducing size of ear bud ( from very large to smallest) with no effect. Since last year he has stopped wearing these $9000 aids. Ear specialists cannot find infection but his physical pain is real.  He has chronic Tinnitus which has never been helped. We found the Evoke app unhelpful and regret that we ever sought help through the recommended audiologist. Jolyn Mascaluk , Brisbane Australia.

Hello, I’ve just come across your post. It’s been quite a while since you posted but I’m hoping your husband has now found a solution to deter the pain he has experienced using hearing aids. It’s really cruel that an Audiologist would laugh at someone’s pain instead of showing compassion and try to help. I found that my earl canal is quite small so have to use smaller H/A tips. Larger ones did hurt my ears and I even had to visit the hospital to have a larger one removed as it got stuck. Truly hope your husband is now doing well. Take care.x

The 440's are my 4th pair of Widex and I've been wearing them for a couple months now. A significant improvement in sound quality over my previous pair. Had the old ones for about 4 years but was having increasing difficulty hearing in noisy environments. These new ones are definitely better and the soundsense app really does work. It is so good that I've been able to tune my units for better hearing than even the audiologist was able to do. This however has caused dissatisfaction because the setting I've created cannot be converted to one of the standard programs and has to be selected using the app every time the units are turned off (daily). My audiologist contacted Widex to see if he could retrieve or determine what the custom settings were so they could be programmed as a standard. This is apparently not an option. Given the $8,000 paid for these, you'd think that would be something doable. I still like the sound processing on units however, this seems like an obvious miss on Widex's part. Streaming with these units (using the comdex pendant) is also significantly more stable which is great. Still having to use the streamer with my Android phone is disappointing. Seems like this is still a long way off for Widex.

I am astounded at how much these aids have helped me hear. It's like the first time I got prescription glasses and could see the edges of leaves. I got the black version and love how it blends in with my glasses. The receiver wire is so small and so conformed to my ear and most people can't see it at all and when I point it out they are very surprised at how much it blends in. I love the cell phone audio streaming and TV streaming. The initial aids I received had repeated problems with streaming audio failures requiring power cycling of the aids. My provider exchanged them under warranty and the new set are almost perfect. The Evoke smartphone app is solid. The Universal sound setting of the app is excellent and I rarely switch to another setting. I am now telling my wife to speak softer since she was so used to speaking loudly for me. I can now discern speech so much better than without. These are my first hearing aids so I can't compare them to other brands/models. I believe the most important thing is the quality of your provider and hearing test and their skill in setting up the devices. It took some adjustment for my ear canals to tolerate the receiver as it initially hurt in spots. Since I have open domes I do have trouble hearing in phone call streaming while in noisy and/or loud environments since the receiver isn't able to be loud enough to overcome the environment but if I cover one ear canal I can usually overcome it. I used to think that I was too young to get or need hearing aids and feared the stigma of having them, but now I am so happy with the result that I have no fears or concerns and am a big promoter of others not waiting.

My hearing aid is compatible with my iPhone and TV Play. When using these I hear every word clearly and I'm very happy with this. I no longer need closed captioning and feel less disabled and feel I can communicate better. I did not have a cell phone earlier because I couldn't hear on any phone. I love this new tech!

I’m fairly new to hearing aids. I trialed oticon opn 1 for two months but clarity in speech was a problem I had with them. I’ve had Widex Evoke Fusion 2 440’s now for about 6 weeks now. I’m extremely happy with them. I have an iphone 8 and enjoy using the Evoke app. I’ve had the music and zen programs added as well as tv play which streams the tv directly to your hearing aids. These all work very well for me. I do use sound sense learn and have found it extremely helpful, especially in a mall setting. I can now hear a cashier when they speak to me. That used to be a real problem for me.

Only 2.5 weeks into the trial but life is better across the board already. Was worried about things sounding artificial or otherwise unnatural but so far I am grinning ear to ear for the improvements to my mild/moderate hearing loss. As a music lover, I went for top of the line so I wouldn't have that nagging doubt about my choice later but have to admit the price point is hard to get comfortable with. I needs to come down but I didn't want to wait.

Let me start by saying that my hearing loss is moderate and I have only just started to wear hearing aids. I do not need the hearing aids in quiet environments although they do help when I am watching TV. The WIDEX Evoke are the only hearing aids I have experience with so I do not have any reference for comparison. Nevertheless, I am extremely happy and satisfied with the Evoke Fusion 2. I work in a high school where I have trouble understanding students in crowded settings such as the hallways and common areas. I also have trouble with students (and others) who speak softly. I also have trouble in restaurants and other noisy environments. The WIDEX hearing aids are helping me to hear in all of these environments. I find the "Party" program to be the most beneficial. In this mode, the hearing aids do a nice job of quieting the background noise in a natural way. I am able to select different programs and the volume through my iPhone and my Apple Watch. This is very convenient. I can also stream music, podcasts, radio, and other media to the hearing aids - just like what I can do with my AirPods. As with all hearing aids (I can imagine), there is a learning curve and time needed for the mind and body to acclimate to the device. It is important that when pairing the hearing aids with an iPhone, that your iPhone is on the General/Settings/Accessibility/MFi Hearing Devices screen to recognize the hearing aids. Also, it's helpful to turn streaming off (via the iPhone) when in your car to eliminate contention between the car's Bluetooth and the hearing aid's Bluetooth. Otherwise, you may experience clicking as the iPhone switches back and forth from the car's Bluetooth system to the hearing aid's Bluetooth. This is a nuisance, but I think it is an issue many streaming-enabled hearing aids may have when used in a Bluetooth-enabled car. All things considered, I am a very satisfied user of the WIDEX Evoke Fusion 2 hearing aid. I have learned a lot about how to best use the product and am willing to answer questions you may have.

My new Widex Evoke hearing aids are wonderful!! They provide a significant improvement over my previous hearing aids for all sounds. The clarity is exceptional, and the hearing aids do an excellent job of automatically adjusting to any environment I find myself in. The combination of the hearing aids and the features of the application on my phone have made my transition to these hearing aids seamless. The Sound Sense Learn feature in the application allows me to optimize what I want to hear in even the noisiest environments. These are definitely the best hearing aids I have worn!!

This is my third set of hearing aids and they are far superior to anything I could have imagined in options and clearity... One of the real positive things for me was the elimination of the constant ringing in my ears for many many years .... now , however, after about 5 minutes of use the various ringing frequencies I previously heard are gone. The positional N-S-E-W feature is terrific..

Hearing aids are fine, and an improvement over my older Resound units. My only complaint is the TV module uses the old L and R banana plugs, where the Resound used the digital optical cable. I am mystified why Widex would have used older technology when the digital cable connection offers more reliability and better sound quality.

Overall a great improvement, the biggest struggle I have is with severe SNR (signal to noise) with speech (>14dB). The Evokes do have a lot of processing with noise reduction and speech audibility and vastly improve this for me. Previously tried other manufacturers products four to five years ago but found no significant improvement; with the Evokes, my experience of sounds in general has changed dramatically as has intelligibility of voice with any background noise. Soundsense has been rather useful although I'm a little disappointed that this (at least on information presented in the iPhone app) does not impact any noise reduction algorithms or DSP that I'm aware of, however this feature still helps considerably with picking out a particular voice or drowning out other noises without having to fiddle with the equaliser manually. I do notice the AGC and profile changing automatically with various environments although still prefer to switch programmes manually but this is not a negative point, just something I've noticed over the last few weeks of use. The new Impact programme is particularly good for speech in noise I've found over all others and Transport is comfortable. There's no way to mute using the hardware buttons on the hearing airs themselves if you want to have control over comfort/audibility (not quite volume but volume) and the ability to change programme. It's either programme or mute unfortunately but there's always control via the iPhone app. Streaming is good, as are custom programmes via the iPhone app, it would be nice to have this automatically select Music when streaming but apparently over time they are supposed to learn preferences so will see what happens here. Overall, I am quite happy with them and will be keeping, although it was a close and very hard call between Widex (more natural sound, better noise reduction/speech audibility) and Phonak (better accessories and design/also inbuilt ability for Roger FM system).

Review of Widex Evoke Fusion2 440 RIC Brief background: I tried five hearing aids before selecting Widex Evoke Phonak Brio 2 (Costco) Resound Forte (Costco) Oticon OPN1 Phonak Audeo B-R Widex Evoke Fusion2 440 RIC 2.4 The Widex Evoke turned out to be the best solution for me (especially in noisy environments like restaurants or parties). I was surprised that the Oticon OPN1 was not the best considering the postive comments on the forum. The Costco hearing aid performance was most likely poor due the inexperience of the HIS (This was the second Costco I tried since the first one had a three month wait due to sick leave and other issues). The Evoke app for the Iphone can be loaded from the Apple app store. It is relatively easy to use and can be used for a number of functions. There is volume adjust and mute as well as an independent adjust of volume for each hearing aid( right and left). For the RIC model volume can be increased by doing a short press of the adjustment button on the right hearing aid and the left side will decrease the volume. Also a long press will allow one to cycle through the programs which have been installed by the Audiologist. Presently I have three programs: Universal, Restaurant, Music, plus the directional focus function that must be selected by the app. In my case the Restaurant program has been created by the audiologist for noisy environments while still maintaining some of the automatic processing of the Universal program for different environments. In the future I may want to add another program such as the Party program which does not have the automatic selection capability. The Soundsense Learn function is accessed from the basic sound menu on the app and involves making a number of program A/B comparisons based on the initial program (i.e. Universal, Music, etc.) In comparing A versus B the choices are: neither is better, A(orB) is slightly better, A(orB) is moderately better, A(orB) is much better. The number of comparisons can be as many as 20. However it is stated that a significant amount of optimization can obtained after only three comparisons. The app actually pauses after 7 comparisons and asks if you would like to use the present result or continue with more comparisons. The result can be saved as a favorite with a name from a pre selected list. Unforunately the app does not let you create a custon name. The main challenge for me in using Soundsense Learn is the amount of time it takes to do the comparisons while keeping the sound environment constant. For example, it would be nice to have the same person speaking in the restaurant situation during the entire A/B comparison operation. Even though I am still learning to use this function it appears to be very effective in creating custom programs for various environments. PRO MFI excellent stereo streaming from Iphone 6 and calling connectiions Speech clarity Good music program and a three band equalizer Selectable directionality if desired (right, left, forward, or backward) Many selectable programs for the audiologist to choose from Good feedback management Ability to enhance performance for each program and environments via soundsense learn on the Evoke Iphone app. CON Can't create custom names for favorite programs

Overall, the performance has exceeded my expectations. I upgraded from an older pair of Widex Clear hearing aids to get the iPhone connection and it has really made a difference for me. I enjoy streaming Netflix while my wife sleeps. Only downside is I need more sleep. The actual hearing has improved as well, but I haven't played around much with the machine learning stuff yet. Hopefully that will help as noisy places are still hard for me.

I’ve tried other brands on a trial basis. I was born with hearing loss. It’s been declining very rapidly. The four audiologists that I’ve gone to for consultations said that I would be deaf and suffer from Dementia with hearing devices. The three day weekend that I had the Widex Evoke 440 literally changed my world significantly. I have to have impressions made for custom-made products to go in my very narrow ear canal [another birth defect]. I’ll have them before the end of September. I won’t have to say “huh?”, “repeat that, please” or “I still can’t hear you” ever again!!! I simply cannot wait until this phenomenal instruments are in my ears!!! It will be quite an adjustment, but an entirely new world for me!!!

Very expensive mistake. Paid over $7000 and I regret this purchase. I could not recommend these hearing aids to anyone especially at this price point. I think the marketing hype is not a fair representation of the functions of these hearing aids.

Hi Dave, How is your experience going with Evoke? I´m super curious about it. I´m trying on the Beyond 440, and just learnt about Evoke. Sounds interesting!

Not nearly as well as I had hoped. Kinda disappointed.

I'm 64, male and these are my first hearing aids, so I can't compare to anything else. My hearing loss is high frequency apparently due to unprotected gun shooting as a child, so I've never been aware of a hearing loss until my now much more advanced age and complaints from my spouse. Now, with this hearing aid I can hear light breezes in the trees, change in my pocket and generally brighter, more detailed audible input. These Evoke fusion 2 330's seem to working hard and successfully at evaluating the environment and changing to react. I can hear the changes as I walk from my machine production floor to my office, for instance. Seems very sophisticated. Hard to say how effective, though since it's only been a couple of weeks and I'm not sure my brain has adjusted completely. I sense no magic bullet for troublesome environments like noisy restaurants. It was difficult before and is still difficult. I was told to expect this. I had a troublesome receiver wire in one unit that was quickly replaced and remedied by the local audiologist's staff. Bottom line is that I am certain that these have massively improved my hearing, but I find it impossible to quantify. I really love the Bluetooth music capability and the adjustable sound fields through my Iphone App. I notice some instability with Bluetooth streaming but not bad. The annoying problem with a receiver wire cutting out was surprisingly easy to fix and they seem solid as a rock now. Comfortable too, even with glasses. So, thumbs up and I sure wish they were not so expensive. I got the rechargeable batteries, which suits me.

Currently evaluating Evoke 330. First my hearing loss is limited to high treble frequencies where voice is most pronounced. Performance of Evoke 330 unit is adequate for my hearing loss w exception of Bluetooth capability. During trial period Bluetooth signal cuts out w regularity while either streaming videos or UTube videos. Not known if units are defective or Bluetooth HA platform is unstable. Still evaluating. Would be very cautious of device if highly reliant on Bluetooth technology.

Is anybody out there using the Widex EVOKE 440 with machine learning technology?

yes but have only used it a few days on a 2 week trial so still trying to get to grip with the basics

I've been using the Evoke 440 for a couple of months.  I have custom domes.  I replaced Phonak HA's.  This is my first time with custom domes. They're a big improvement over Phonak but I'm having a problem with loud background noise most of the time.  They certainly work well in a quiet environment with one other person speaking, but in any loud background environment, the background nose exceeds speech.  My Audi is working on it but not sure he'l be able to correct it.  He's replaced the custom domes with double round standard domes but not much of a reduction on background noise.

The iPhone app is great.  I've tried custom programs and they work well but not sure that I want to use a program for many different environments.  Overall, I think these will be better than Phonak for me if we can get this background noise resolved.  Anyone else find that Widex Evoke has less "comfortable" hearing

I’m sixty-eight and decided I needed to have my hearing checked. My wife has Parkinson’s Disease and her voice is now quieter and at a higher frequency. Couldn’t understand the actors on tv either.  Turned up the volume, no better, actually worse, and then someone starts shooting guns.  I wish these actors would practice more at shooting.  Takes twenty rounds to get one hit. Must be costing the producers a fortune. So, the hearing test showed I had lost fifty percent in one ear and forty-five percent in the other. Higher frequencies.  For good measure he looked up my nose and asked me if I snored.  How would I know?

Went to the Widex shop with my lovely wife and tried the Evoke. At last I could hear her telling me she loved me (without the excuse of asking her to repeat it, which is a shame). Ten days later I sat in the shop and got given the basics of these lovely, little darlings. For the first week, Cátia, the technical assistant told me simply to wear them. No app. Apparently there will be many trips to her to tune these in and get used to the app.    For those of you who are unaware there are three forms of dyslexia. Reading, writing and IT. I have the last one by the bucket full. It’s a real problem of living today. Friends love to show me how it’s done but they have hardly left the room before I am floundering once more. So I am apprehensive about the app approach to these aids.

So, what has changed in this first twenty-four hours? So much and all for the better. The instant ability to hear my wife clearly is wonderful. We’ve been together for twenty years and now we have to battle her Parkinson’s together. A little vanity is coming to the fore. I’d let my hair grow a little long around the ears in preparation.  But to be frank I realise I couldn’t care less if people can see those mini computers behind my ears. I can hear.

Why did I choose Widex. I didn’t. I’ve noticed their shop in town for years. A good sign. Solid business. Read a few reviews. Didn’t put me off. Expensive? Of course. So is Beluga and Dom Perignon but you aren’t renting the Widex.

Sorry I can’t offer any comparisons but I hope my words will encourage people to put aside their concerns about being seen out and about with hearing aids. I can hear clearly like I haven’t done in years. Thank you Widex and Cátia.

Thank you so much for your review.  It is amusing, real and just plain a reasonable review.  I was fitted for the Evoke 220 today and my hearing world was reopened.  I chose the 220 for the price and ease of use.  I look forward to getting them in a week or so. I will write my personal review during my trial period.

Have been wearing hearing aids for 14 years. My first pair were Widex Senso Diva and they were wonderful. I think I got spoiled. Am now on my 4th pair (Starkey) and am disappointed. Nothing seems to be as good. Seriously looking to try the Evoke while I’m still in my warranty/trial period. Anyone able to compare Evoke to Senso Diva? Thanks!
Member

I have a Widex Senso CX+, Starkey Muse i2400 and a Widex Evoke 330. Also had a Evoke 440 on trial.

In a quiet environment the sound quality  of the Senso and Evoke does not differ much, but in a noisy environment, the Evoke 330 and 440 is far superior. The 440 is much quieter in windy conditions, than the Senso, or 330 models, but otherwise not a big difference in sound quality between Evoke 330 and 440.

I found the sound quality of the Evoke models are far superior to that of the Starkey Muse i2400 model.

Also remember there is a big difference in price between Starkey, Evoke 330 and 440 models, and sound quality also depends on how well the hearing aid is adjusted for your ears.

I'm pleased with my new Widex Evoke 440 hearing aids but disappointed with TV Play.  I've tested with two TV Play devices (having returned the first one) as well as TV DEX.  The sound from the TV Play devices is distorted.  I feel like I'm hearing a split second echo or some sort of interference.  I've tried with multiple TV Play devices and three different TV's in my house.  I've checked the TV output to insure the source was digital.  All are consistently distorted.

On the other hand, the older TV DEX device provides a much clearer sound.

Has anyone else encountered similar problems with TV Play and is there a solution?  I'd prefer to use the newer TV Play technology but will have to return this device unless I can find a way for it to provide a clear sound.

Hi.

I've had my Evoke 440 F2's for a couple of months. I saw the premature release information regarding the release of 'TV Play' in the UK and thought that this, and new aids, would solve a major problem I have.

I have a pair of Sennheiser RS 195 wireless headphones, which being digital, suffer from latency. This results in the sound from the TV speakers arriving before the sound from the headphones, causing a very noticeable echo.

I received the 'TV Play' a couple of weeks ago and connected it using the 'optical' cable. I immediately had problems setting the aid's volume level, which was far too loud. I had to set the level adjustments to minimum, and the 'Mixer' to 'Surround' to achieve an acceptable level.

My professional consulted with Widex, who said that an aid software upgrade was necessary, and that this would solve the problem. After the upgrade all of the hearing tests and settings had to be repeated, and as it was not possible to see if the upgrade had solved the problem, I went home to try it out.

I connected the TV Play to our TV, and set the following parameters: Master volume 3. Volume left 3, right 3. Equaliser flat -4, -4, -4. Mixer centre position, which produced an acceptable level.

Whilst these settings provided an acceptable level, there was a slight, but noticeable echo. Eliminating this required shifting the Mixer control to the right, which of course increased the 'Stream' volume, whilst blocking the 'Surround' sound. This of course prevented me from hearing external sounds, including my wife ☺. In addition alterations had to be made the Master volume, Equaliser and left right Balance settings to compensate for the increase in volume. The alternative was to reduce the TV volume to zero, however this was not advisable whilst my wife was watching.

Later I had the opportunity to watch several programmes with the TV sound off. I was aware of a 'popping' sound in the left ear, which I presumed to be a result of high level clipping. I checked the Sound settings on our TV, a Panasonic 58DX 900 series. I tried both PCM and Auto with SPDIF (Sony Panasonic Digital Interface, it's basically the same as Toslink) with output levels of between 0dB to -10dB, but this had no effect on (a) reducing the 'popping', or (b) the volume? ?

Finally I watched Question Time, where the popping was really quite distracting, to the point in fact where I turned off the aids and used my Senhheiser headphones. As previously stated these provide excellent sound and allow me to correct for my hearing deficiency, but can only be used when viewing alone.

Whilst using the headphones, there was no 'popping. I checked to see what effect altering the Sound settings on the TV had.  Altering the SPDIF level from 0db to -10db resulted in a noticeable reduction of volume. Which I think indicates that the TV is providing a 'clean' controllable audio output.

My professional is discussing this with Widex, I have an appointment with him in 4 days to see if/how Widex plan to overcome these issues.

Hi Nick

Suspect we might be suffering from early adopters syndrome .

Last night I tried again with the same results, what I did notice however was an unnatural stereo effect. What I mean is that when watching, say a drama, I was aware of louder than usual sounds off to the left and right. It reminded me of the early days of stereo records e.g. the Beatles when the stereo effect was over emphasised.

Listening using the TV speakers, or my headphones, the sound stage is balanced, there are no sudden distracting loud noises off stage.

I also noticed in another post that streaming reduced battery life by a considerable amount, 6 days reduced to 4 days, i.e. a third.

I’ve edited my profile, but it doesn’t appear to show my location on my posts, anyway I’m in the UK.

Hi Nick.

Has your professional taken any action, are you still experiencing the ‘distortion’?

We have carried out further investigations, these revealed an interest interesting fact. If both aids are inserted, as they would normally be, the problem we have tried to describe is apparent. If however only one aid is used, either one, the problem disappears!

It appears that the aids sometimes produce slightly different sounds, perhaps a small delay, or a ‘clip’ and we hear this. Widex are investigating.

I will post again when they report back.

Hi Nick.

Today I received an update for Evoke. Fresh batts then go. All went ok, had to unpair and then re-pair the aids. Then the app kept stopping and I had to send reports. In the end I uninstalled the app and the re- installed to get it all to work. It appears to be better.

I spent a couple of hours fine tuning the settings and now have a ‘working’ system. I think it’s ok, and the differences in tv programme’s sound quality gives rise to anomalies. Added to this my now ‘improved hearing’ makes the anomaly’s apparent.

Hi Noel,

Thanks so much for all your investigation.

After my two failed attempts with Widex TV PLAY, my audiologist took a device home to test for herself.  She told me that her experience was much worse than I described.  And Widex has been unable to help.

My audi then gave me a pair of Oticon HA's and their streamer.  The streamer was much better but the aids weren't as comfortable as the Widex.  Tomorrow, she wants me to try Signia aids which she thinks might be as comfortable for me as the Widex and the Signia streamer is identical to the Oticon technology.

For the past two weeks, I've been using TV DEX with my Widex HA's and the quality is acceptable although not as convenient.

Thanks again.

Nick (U.S.)

I had a trial with the Widex Evoke 440 Fusion 2 for 40 days. Sound was great, Bluetooth to my iPhone was awesome. The only problem I had was the size of the hearing aids. They are heavier and larger than my prior Oticon hearing aids. After several hours of wearing them, they became uncomfortable, like wearing a hat that was too tight. They also interfered with my glasses. Something about the shape of them. I am still under trial period so switched to Oticon OPN1 Minirte and they feel better but the sound is not as good. I wondered if anyone else felt the size and weight difference was an issue with the Widex? I sure preferred the sound quality and the program for the iPhone was better as well.

I did find that I was knocking into the Widex with my glasses (I change them a lot), and I needed to be more careful or I'd end up pulling the speaker a little further out which led to feedback. The Oticon were comfortable, but was not happy with the sound; much better with Widex. I am trialing ReSound LiNX Quattro right now, and they don't seem to be impacted by my glasses. I'm not sure yet sound and control-wise if it's better than Widex, but I'll end up with one or the other. Both have useful apps; Oticon not so much.
Techfisher

Trialing a pair of the Evoke 440 BTE's.  First experience with HA's.  Not happy at the moment with the sounds of voices.  Very shrill and high pitched for men and women. AuD doesn't seem to be able to fix this problem.  It may be inexperience plus they only take an hour and then they are done. And this is from one of the supposedly better Aud practices where I live. Going to try another Aud and see if they can do any better.

So far its ok, can hear about what person with mask say. But you can only have a high speech recognized if the person eye to eye not behind or beside you. The speech recognized will drop to maybe 10-20%
