Audien Hearing has launched Audien Shields, a new hearing protection product designed to reduce loud sound exposure while preserving more natural sound quality than traditional foam earplugs, according to the company's press release.

Scottsdale, Arizona-based Audien Hearing, best known for its over-the-counter Atom X and Atom Pro 2, said Shields were developed with input from audiologists and are intended for people who regularly spend time in loud environments, such as concerts, sporting events, job sites, racing events, travel settings, and other noisy everyday situations.

According to Audien, Shields provide up to 45 dB of sound reduction and include a simple dial with three adjustable protection modes. The company says the goal is to reduce potentially harmful sound levels while maintaining speech clarity, music quality, and environmental awareness.

Noise exposure remains a major public health concern. Prolonged exposure to sounds at or above about 85 dB can contribute to noise-induced hearing loss, and louder environments can become hazardous much more quickly. Concerts, stadiums, industrial settings, motorcycles, power tools, and other high-noise environments can all exceed safe listening levels depending on intensity and duration.

Unlike conventional disposable earplugs, which can significantly muffle sound, Audien is positioning Shields as a more lifestyle-oriented form of hearing protection for people who want to remain engaged with their surroundings. The company says the device is designed to preserve a more natural sound experience while lowering volume across several use cases.

Audien CEO Laurie Ann Goldman said the launch reflects the company’s broader move beyond hearing aids into preventive hearing care.

We create high-quality hearing solutions that are accessible to more Americans than ever before. We would be delighted if you never needed them. That’s why we’re launching Audien Shields. The hearing you protect today is the hearing you keep for tomorrow.

Dr. Rachel Trinker, Head of Audiology at Audien Hearing, said the product was designed to address a common barrier to consistent hearing protection use: the perception that earplugs make music, conversation, or the surrounding environment sound dull or disconnected.

“Real protection used to mean giving something up—sound, clarity, the feeling of being in the room,” Trinker said. “We engineered Shields so people keep all of it.”
