hearingtracker․comThe synaptic connections between cochlear inner hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons can be lost due to noise or aging (i.e., “hidden hearing loss). Creighton University and Washington University researchers have discovered a novel role for innate-immune cells such as macrophages (white blood cells) in synaptic repair that could be harnessed to regenerate lost ribbon synapses in noise- or age-linked cochlear synaptopathy.
jneurosci․orgRene Gifford and MD/PhD student Ansley Kunnath join Brian Taylor to discuss how auditory regenerative medications could change the way Audiology is practiced. They also share the details of a clinical trial involving donepezil, a drug that improves cognitive function in Alzheimer’s patients, in adult cochlear implant recipients.
