Living in a box: Understanding acoustic parameters in the NICU environment

Results from this study show high noise levels within the NICU environment and incubators, with noise that exceeds the recommendations of the AAP, WHO, and EPA guidelines (noises exceeding 100 dBA and dBSPL inside and outside the incubator, respectively). Additionally, external noises sound duller (less bright/sharp), taking on a more tonal character inside the incubator. The authors also note the importance of adequate exposure to sound in the extra-uterine environment rather than complete deprivation.
